As spring brings warmer temperatures and blooming flowers, pollen levels rise, causing discomfort for allergy sufferers. Along with sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion, pollen can also cling to clothing, making symptoms worse and leaving behind stubborn stains.
Experts are now advising those affected to keep a roll of sticky tape on hand as a simple and effective way to remove pollen from fabrics without making the problem worse. Pollen grains are tiny and lightweight, easily carried by the wind and attaching to clothes, hair, and skin. When pollen lands on fabric, the natural instinct may be to brush it away with a hand.
However, experts strongly caution against this, as the oils in human skin can cause the pollen to adhere even more firmly to the fibres, making it difficult to remove. Instead, they recommend letting the pollen dry and then using a soft brush or adhesive tape to lift it off.
Luxury florist Appleyard Flowers has shared advice on dealing with pollen stains effectively.
A spokesperson explained that the key is to act carefully and avoid moisture. They advised taking the stained clothing outside and giving it a good shake to remove any loose particles.
Then, using the sticky side of adhesive tape, gently press it onto the pollen-stained fabric to lift the grains away. Most of the pollen should come off quickly and easily, preventing further damage to the clothing.
If some pollen remains, further steps can help. Allowing the stain to dry fully before attempting removal can prevent it from spreading. A vacuum cleaner can also be used to lift stubborn pollen from the fabric.
Another effective method is exposing the garment to direct sunlight, which helps break down the pollen and makes it easier to remove.
For those who suffer from hay fever, minimising pollen exposure is essential. Changing clothes after spending time outdoors, washing fabrics frequently, and keeping windows closed during high pollen counts can all help reduce irritation.
With pollen levels expected to remain high throughout the season, having a roll of sticky tape handy may be a surprisingly useful tool in keeping both symptoms and stains under control.
