A doctor has revealed a quick and simple cleaning hack for removing persistent blood stains in mere seconds.
When you’re bleeding, the last thing you often worry about is avoiding stains. But should blood get on your clothes or fabrics, the difficulty in cleaning it becomes apparent, especially if you leave it to dry. Although cold water is traditionally recommended, sometimes it doesn’t completely eradicate the stain.
Dr Sood, a board certified MD, has divulged his easy method for wiping out dried blood stains from clothing and other materials almost instantly.
“Did you know that hydrogen peroxide can clean blood stains?” he revealed at the start of his TikTok clip.
Hydrogen peroxide, known for its potent bleaching and disinfecting capabilities, also plays a role in various industrial applications. Its use should be approached with care due to its powerful oxidising effects.
He explains further: “Its potent oxidising properties breaks down the blood upon contact into oxygen and water, quickly removing the the stains.”
In the background of his video, someone is seen demonstrating the technique by pouring a little hydrogen peroxide on a bloodstain. It begins to fizz immediately upon contact. Once the solution had spread over the entire stain, the person filming effortlessly wiped it away with a tool to show the vanishing stain.
When tackling blood stains, hydrogen peroxide can be a useful cleaning agent, but it’s crucial to promptly follow up with a machine wash or thorough rinse to eliminate any residual bleaching agent to prevent fabric discoloration.
Dr Sood’s tip on this method has led to an outpouring of gratitude in the comments section, with many hailing him as a ‘lifesaver’.
A commenter acknowledged the monthly necessity for some, saying: “Yup, as a girl, we need this every month! for emergency!”.
Another person pointed out that “When the stain is fresh normal cold water cleans blood as well,”.
Yet, questions arose regarding why the hydrogen peroxide didn’t bleach the blue fabric. One individual queried, “Why did it not bleach the blue fabric?” which prompted a response from another: “u have to leave it on longer + expose to the sun to bleach with peroxide! as long as you rinse it right away it wont bleach.”
It’s imperative to use caution with hydrogen peroxide or any bleach as they are toxic and can be harmful if mishandled. As stated on the government’s website, the most common adverse reaction associated with hydrogen peroxide is irritant contact dermatitis at the site of exposure.
