The brother of “Real Housewives of Orange County” alum Lydia McLaughlin was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop in Southern California.
Geoffrey Stirling, 45, was driving his motorcycle on the Pacific Coast Highway when Newport Beach police pulled him over on Thursday night, law enforcement sources told TMZ.
It’s unclear why he was pulled over or what exactly transpired, but at least one officer fired their weapon after Stirling allegedly grew “uncooperative.”
Stirling was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No officers were said to have been wounded in the incident.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta confirmed that a fatal officer-involved shooting occurred in Newport Beach at around 9:15 p.m. Thursday, but did not provide further details on what led to the incident. The California Department of Justice is investigating and will independently review the shooting.
McLaughlin, who starred on seasons 8 and 12 of the Bravo staple, said in a statement to TMZ that the family “is devastated by the loss” of her brother.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends, family and the community,” McLaughlin said. “We kindly as for privacy as we mourn.”
McLaughlin shared in a post earlier this month that her family had just marked six months since the death of her mother.
