Movie fans are gearing up ahead of this action packed month with some big releases on the horizon. Highly anticipated by gamer fans, A Minecraft Movie, starring Jack Black, hit our screens early in April and there’s plenty of choice for the horror lovers this month too with Death of a Unicorn and Sinners. April 18 will see the release of action thriller The Amateur followed by Warfare, which has already been receiving rave reviews.
There is a sprinkling of comedy coming for those who prefer something a little lighter on Friday with the Penguin Lessons, based on the 2015 memoir by British teacher Tom Michell. At the end of the month the sequel to the 2016 film, The Account, starring Ben Affleck opens in picture houses. Here’s the best seven films to check out at cinemas this month.
A Minecraft Movie (April 4)
Inspired by the hugely popular video game, this comedy adventure boasts a starry cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black and Jennifer Coolidge alongside younger stars Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen. It follows four misfits who find themselves on a magical quest after they are pulled into the Overworld through a mysterious portal.
Death of a Unicorn (April 4)
Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega head up A24’s latest release as a father and daughter duo who accidentally hit and kill a unicorn with their car. The film – produced by Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster – is the feature debut from filmmaker Alex Scharfman and also includes Richard E Grant, Will Poulter and Jessica Hynes in its cast.
The Amateur (April 11)
Playing a CIA cryptographer Rami Malek is out for revenge in this crime thriller after terrorists kill his wife. The film is adapted from the 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell. The film’s supporting cast includes Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany and Julianne Nicholson.
Sinners (April 18)
Writer and director Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan have come together once again for this supernatural horror film set in Southern America, there has been some mystery around the exact plot but we know Jordan will play troubled twin brothers returning to their hometown. The star-studded cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo.
Warfare (April 18)
Warfare, written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, is based on the former’s experience serving in the Iraq War and follows a group of US Navy SEALs in real-time as they embark on a dangerous assignment through enemy territory. It’s all-star cast includes Will Poulter, Charles Melton, Joseph Quinn, Kit Connor, Cosmo Jarvis, D’Pharoah Woon-A-Tai and Michael Gandolfini.
The Penguin Lessons (April 18)
Steve Coogan plays a British teacher in this drama – which is based on a true story. Coogan finds himself living in Argentina when his life unexpectedly changes after adopting a penguin. Based on Tom Michell’s memoir of the same name and set in 1976, the film also stars Jonathan Pryce.
The Accountant 2 (April 25)
Following the first part in 2016, Ben Affleck returns for a second outing as accountant-turned-action-hero Christian Wolff – this time teaming up with his estranged brother (played by Jon Bernthal) for a new mission. The duo are tasked with solving the murder of someone close to Treasury agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson).
